Building Community and Empowering Vulnerable Adults with School House Café
Building Community and Empowering Vulnerable Adults with School House Café
28 April 2022
Challenge
The School House Café needed a website that could do justice to their role as a vital community hub in Cheltenham. Beyond simply showcasing their café offerings, the site needed to communicate the heart of what they do — bringing together long-term residents and students, providing employment pathways for vulnerable adults, and hosting activities that strengthen the St. Paul’s community. Equally important was creating a straightforward way for supporters to make donations, helping sustain this important work.
Accessibility was non-negotiable. The website needed to be fully usable for all visitors, regardless of ability. This meant thoughtful decisions around design, layout, navigation, and content structure — ensuring everyone in their diverse community could engage with the café online just as warmly as they’re welcomed through the door.
Solution
Working closely with the School House Café team, we took time to understand their goals, audience, and the unique role they play in the St. Paul’s community. Our approach centred on creating a custom landing page that would feel as warm and welcoming as the café itself. We incorporated their existing branding with carefully chosen colours and friendly language, ensuring the design reflected the café’s personality while remaining easy to navigate for all visitors.
Beyond the landing page, we developed dedicated sections for the café’s history, menu offerings, and community involvement. A key feature was the integrated donation functionality, making it simple for supporters to contribute to the café’s mission of providing employment opportunities for vulnerable adults and serving as a genuine community hub. Every element was designed with accessibility in mind, from clear, concise content to thoughtful layout decisions that ensure the site is inclusive and usable for visitors with disabilities.
Process
We started by working closely with the School House Café team to understand their goals, audience, and unique community offering. This involved exploring their mission to support vulnerable adults, their role as a community hub in St. Paul's, and their need for an accessible platform that could showcase their café while enabling donations.
We developed a custom landing page design that reflected the café's warm, welcoming personality. Using the café's existing branding, we incorporated warm colours and playful language to create a friendly tone. We carefully planned the site structure to include pages for the café's history, menu, and community involvement, alongside a donation feature.
During development, we prioritised accessibility and usability for all visitors, including those with disabilities. We focused on clear, concise content and thoughtfully considered every aspect of layout and design. Working collaboratively with the café's team, we ensured all content was inclusive and the donation feature was simple to use.
